How it works

- Base area = room length × width (or enter total square feet for irregular spaces).
- Waste factor: straight lay adds 8%, diagonal 12%, herringbone/complex patterns 18%.
- Boxes = (area including waste) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up to whole boxes.
- Material cost = total square feet purchased × price per square foot.
- Underlayment (optional) is estimated in 100 sq ft rolls over the base area.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
8–10% for a standard straight installation, 12–15% for diagonal layouts, and up to 18–20% for herringbone or rooms with many angles and closets. Cuts at walls, defective planks, and future repairs all come out of that margin.
How many square feet are in a box of flooring?
Most laminate and vinyl plank boxes cover 18–24 square feet, but it varies by plank size — the exact coverage is printed on the box label. Enter your product's real number in the calculator for an accurate box count.
Should I keep leftover flooring?
Yes — keep at least one unopened box. Floors get discontinued, and dye lots vary between production runs. A spare box is the only guaranteed color-match repair kit you'll ever have.
Do I need underlayment for laminate or vinyl plank?
Laminate almost always needs a foam underlayment unless it's pre-attached to the planks. Many vinyl planks have an attached pad; over concrete you may still need a vapor barrier. Check your product's installation sheet — it overrides any general rule.
